1224 -
Bedford Communications received a call for a male subject that had fallen 20 feet, striking his head. The initial location was given as being in the area of Sunset Field (MP78). Therefore Co. 1 (Bedford FD), Sq. 1 (Bedford LSC), along with M14-9 and County 10 (BCoFR) were assigned to the run. At 1232 E1 requested for Co. 2 to respond with our two 4wd
Honda ATVs to assist in the search and rescue. On the arrival of a Blue Ridge Parkway Ranger it was determined that the scene was actualy north of the FAA Radar Base (MP76). It was also determined that the trails were going to be too tight for the ATVs to be of much assistance. Once the search crew located the patient, and the assessment was completed it was decided to medivac the patient off of the mountain. The ATVs were then used to survey the tall, grassy landing zone for any unseen obstructions and make one trip to deliver equipment to the search crew. After witnessing some rarely seen helicopter maneuvers all units returned to service.

On April 1st the South Pedlar ATV Trail System in Amherst County, VA were opened for the 2012 season. Since the last time Co. 2 had a run on the trails two new trails had been built. Chief Cocke felt this was a good opportunity to excercise the ATV's and learn the new trails. This afternoon Lieutenant Neas and Chief Cocke loaded up the department's two 4X4 500cc Honda Foreman four wheelers and rode the trails. While riding several "hot spots" for crashes were shown to Lt. Neas. After a few hours on the trails we loaded up and returned home. After the ATV's were refueled and given a bath they were put back in service. To anyone enjoying the trail system: Please remember that all trails are for two way traffic, and the age requirements have been dropped to only 12 years old. Have fun and enjoy the outdoors of Central Virginia. But please ride smart!...
