Possible structure fire / Amherst County

Wednesday, January 7, 2015  At 21:07 Company 2 units were alerted to a possible structure fire in Amherst County. The Engine w/4 was on the road responding within 7 minutes. Monelison Fire units responding POV updated incoming units that the fire was contained to a heating blanket. Engine 2 continued to the scene to check the area and electrical outlets with the TIC and collect information. Units cleared shortly afterwards.



MVA- School Days Road

Monday, December 29, 2014  At 20:13 hours Company 2 members were alerted to a single car MVC on School Days Road. Engine 2 (with 4) was responding within minutes of the alarm sounding thanks to members practicing drills at the firehouse. Units arrived to find a single vehicle off the road with moderate to heavy front end damage. EMS units traveling POV were already attending to the patient with the Medic truck arriving shortly there after. The single patient was transported via medic unit to a near by hospital. 




Saturday, December 20, 2014  At 16:04hrs. Company 2, Squad 2, Medic 14-5 and SOC (Special Operations Command) units were alerted to (3) three subjects that were stranded on an island in the James River just above the parkway bridge. Units arrived at the boat landing area and launched the Bravo Zodiac with FF's Neas and Edwards to investigate the call further. After reaching the caller it was learned that the subjects boat had drifted away, unnoticed. Bravo boat and it's crew assisted the boaters back to the boat landing without incident. 




Thursday, December 11, 2014  At 2053 hours Co. 1 (Bedford FD), Co. 2, and Co. 5 (Forest FD) were dispatched to Kennedy Ridge Road for a residential structure fire. E2 responded with 5 firemen as the second due engine company and T2 responded with 2 for water supply. While in route FC1 (B. Creasy) requested B2 (with 4) to respond for establishing water supply in a nearby creek and extinguishing spot fires due caused by the 45mph winds. After a lengthy, wind blown overhaul all Co. 2 units returned to Big Island at 0100 hours.




Sunday, December 7, 2014  At 1500 hours the Big Island Fire Department Christmas Parade began through "downtown" Big Island. This year there were many entries, including some from as far away as Smith Mountain Lake (Saunders VFD) and Botetourt County (Buchanon VFD). A great time was had by all, especially the children. Each child that came to the firehouse after the parade got to meet with Santa Claus and received a gift from the Jolly Ole Fella. A list of trophy winners will be posted soon. We would love to have more floats in the 2015 parade. So if you are part of an organization in our around the Big Island community, please consider entering the parade. You have a year to prepare...




Monday, December 1, 2014  -1900hrs Tonight the men of the Big Island Fire Department held our annual officers elections. The results were as follows. Line Officers: Chief: Brandon Cocke, Deputy Chief: TR Goff, Assistant Chief: Burke Konen, Captain: Frank Branch, Lieutenant: Taylor Neas, 2nd Lieutenant: Jarrett Branch. Executive Officers: President: Ray Goff, Vice President: Stephen Poindexter, Secretary: Jarrett Branch, Treasurer: Mel Nowlin, Communications: Blair Edwards, Chaplain: John Rusher. We want to thank the 2014 officers for their service, and wish the 2015 officers the best luck possible.




Monday, August 4, 2014  Tonight in our monthly business meeting the Truck Committee presented their findings to the membership. The membership voted to partner with Williams Emergency Vehicle Services, LLC for the purchase of a Seagrave Marauder II engine. The contract will be signed this week, with a build time being approximately 9 to 12 months.



MVA - Blue Ridge Parkway

Saturday, July 26, 2014 17:35 Company 2 units, along with Squad 2, were dispatched to the Blue Ridge Parkway near Petite's Gap Road for a reported motor vehicle accident. E2 (w/4) arrived to find a single pickup on the shoulder of the road, and with no injuries, units returned to service shortly after arriving. Units responding: E2, CR2, and M2-2.



Vehicle Fire - Elon Rd

Friday, July 25, 2014 10:55 Company 2 was alerted to the area of Elon Road and Hercules Road for a reported vehicle fire. E2 (w/2) arrived to find one RV fully involved, with an additional vehicle exposure. E2's personnel stretched a bumper line, quickly containing the fire to vehicle of origin. Units responding: E2, T2, and B2.
